Glenorchy: A Scenic Day Trip to Middle Earth
Lord of the Rings fans, people wondering if paradise exists, nature fans -- okay honestly, anyone passing through New Zealand -- this post is for you.
We started out from Queenstown on a half day LOTR with Pure Glenorchy, and it was the best day of our entire trip in New Zealand.
Throughout our journey, we were treated to spectacular views and learned fun tidbits from our amazing guide, like how the three LOTR films were actually filmed at the same time, how particular Peter Jackson was about the details in the film, how New Zealand soldiers were included as extras, how the LOTR actors have matching tattoos, and so much more that I won't mention here.
And of course, we saw a number of the filming locations -- like where Ithilien, Isengard, Lothlorien, the peaks where Caradhras Pass were filmed, and more.
Highlights
At Bennett's Bluff, you'll see beautiful views that you may recognize from the LOTR series.
...and find the cutest library here in Glenorchy!
Stop by quaint cafes for some coffee or tea and a bite to eat.
Take a walk down to Lake Wakatipu.
Snap a photo in front of Glenorchy Wharf for the "gram."
After your trip to the lake, step into the Lothlorien Forest!
Don't forget to say hello to fellow friends:
Next, welcome to Paradise.
Yes, paradise literally exists here. Just look at this view:
You'll also be able to say, "I have been to Isengard," since the setting for Isengard was filmed in Paradise Valley.
Then enjoy "second breakfast" of delicious homemade sandwiches and pastries included in the tour right by a river with a breathtaking view!
At the same time, have fun dressing up as characters from the LOTR -- props like crowns, elf ears, and swords provided!
And remember those Oliphaunts? We made one more stop at the location where the Twelve Mile Delta was filmed in the LOTR before heading back to Queenstown and ending our tour.
Oh, and one last thing: Pure Glenorchy, if you ever come across this page, we were absolutely devastated we left those homemade apricot pastries behind. Please let me know if you'll ever share the recipe ;).
